Ep 1: Carmageddon

Episode 1: Carmageddon

In this episode of Are You Mad At Me? Vickie and Josh talk about moving back to Canada and having tv contracts to create How to Fail at Documentary Filmmaking (which was ultimately rejected by the broadcaster) and How to Fail at Accessibility (based on real life stories of people in the community living with disabilities and facing extreme challenges to everyday life in St .John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador) and being unable to purchase a car having no credit history in the country.

The married couple once again they find themselves without a car and are certainly getting their steps in walking everywhere which helps the relationship tremendously and keeps them in peak physical condition. Just kidding.

(00:18) Emotional Support Beagles

Vickie and Josh are joined throughout the podcast by their beagles who get the zoomies in the middle of recording and bark at nothing and every so often decide they need to cuddle right NOW.

(0:54) Bifocals

Vickie’s ophthalmologist at Costco suggested she get bifocals which is scientifically impossible because she’s so young. Now she struggles to navigate recipes and product ingredient lists at the grocery store.

(3:55)  Canadian immigration

Settling in Canada has financial challenges. Without a credit history in the country banks are unwilling to take a chance on newcomers which can make life difficult here.

(8:33) New car troubles

Buying a car after the pandemic was challenging. One particular used car dealership turned down a cash offer confident that business would pick up and refusing to finance a car for the newcomers.

(10:12) New podcast intro

(13:00)Stand up comedy

Vickie talks about getting started in stand up after talking with some comedian friends about a weird experience she was having and they were laughing at her while she described it so she wrote a five minute set and got up on stage at Last Minute Comedy for the very first time.

Josh talks about producing a comedy show at The Black Sheep where he hosted and Vickie headlined doing 22 minutes.

Vickie reminds Josh that he started in stand up a few years ago and she was fully confident he’d do a great job hosting.

The event went great, the bar was full and the owner was thrilled with the turn out and invited them back anytime.

(23:07) Merch

(24:48) Classic country Charley Pride

Vickie starts singing Crystal Chandelier when Josh asks how their marriage is going.

(27:08) Nateland podcast inspo

The couple have been catching up on Nate Bargatze’s podcast Nateland. They are enjoying the true behind the scenes stories of struggle and bombing and small crowds and getting paid and having a laugh on a podcast together. Both are inspired by the comedians on Nateland’s commitment and different back stories.

(35:19) Broke or booming artist life

Working together is the main goal for Vickie and Josh and figuring out how to get through lean times is almost as challenging as figuring out how to spend money when it flows. Trusting that there will be more gigs and that they actually have talent is always the hardest part.

(36:18) More beagles on the podcast

Future Plans

Josh and Vickie talk about taking an RV out across the country with their kids and beagles because they have people that they want to visit in all the corners like Seattle, California, Maine, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas. And in Canada there are friends in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. They’d like to do the podcast on the road and host songwriters circles and open book nights along the way to meet other artists, writers, musicians and their families and teach the kids about both of their home countries by actually showing it to them.
